Viridor report calls for bans on EPS, PVC and an end to plastic waste exports

The report is called for a UK ban on plastic waste exports and said that it plans to have 90% of its current plastic waste exports recycled domestically once its Avonmouth plastic reprocessing plant becomes operational. The site is set to have a capacity to reprocess 80,000 tonnes of plastics a year.

Viridor chief executive Kevin Bradshaw said: “Reviewing how we extract raw materials, manufacture products and consume them is an essential but often missing element of how we need to tackle climate change.

Its Closing the Loop: Viridor’s roadmap to a truly circular economy report calls for a ban on EPS, PVC and oxy-degradable plastics. The company argued that these materials are “among the most challenging products to recycle and should be entirely excluded from the plastics packaging market unless there is no realistic alternative”.

Viridor added that there are four widely recyclable plastic types – PET, HDPE, LDPE and PP – and these are the most recyclable plastics on the market. It argued that investment in infrastructure is needed “in recycling and reprocessing to deliver increased UK-based recycling rates and quality”.
