Packaging industry struggles with International Women’s Day

The packaging industry is partly keeping up with national averages of female representation on International Women’s Day – but has plenty of scope for gender balance. “There are simply too few women to promote to senior leadership positions,” explained Jo Stephenson, managing director of PHD Marketing and co-founder of Women in Packaging. “Within the next 10 years we are going to see considerable skill and talent begin to exit the industry, which is has an estimated average age of around 43.” Daphna Nissenbaum, chief executive of compostable packing company TIPA, said the lack of gender diversity is ultimately due to the fact that this is a traditionally male dominated space: “If women do not see many of their gender in packaging, this can be incredibly off-putting, as they have no one to look up to, to see that it is possible to take that route, that someone has already blazed the trail and made it possible for others to follow in their footsteps.” She was confident though about ‘eco-packaging’: “We do see a ray of hope in some sub-sectors, such as in sustainability and eco-packaging. We are beginning to see more women as management heads, and I hope that this will only have good consequences for women in all sectors and industries.”
