Corrugated paper box structure design measurement and calculation

May 26, 2022

With the increasing use of corrugated boxes in recent years, more and more industries are involved. Its function is not a simple package of the product, and more and more cardboard boxes users have put forward higher requirements on their functions. In terms of the structural design of the carton, especially in the use of fine corrugated sheets and container packing, reasonable size, shape, and matching materials not only need to consider cost savings, provide optimal packaging solutions, but also need to ensure that the product is in the long-term Good protection of the interior products during shipping will not be harmed and the most effective protection will be provided. This has prompted some carton manufacturers to change their functions from manufacturing to service to better serve carton users in pursuit of a win-win situation for both parties. It is in this case that the structural design of corrugated boxes has become increasingly important. In view of this situation, this paper mainly describes some of the most basic measurements and calculations in the design of corrugated box structures.

Measurement of corrugated box size Representation of corrugated box size Inner warp size Corrugated carton Boxed inner space size External warp size Corrugated carton Boxed outer outline size Manufactured size Corrugated box Size used in the manufacturing process When measuring corrugated boxes, Although it is possible to directly measure its specific size with a tool, in the measurement process, due to the influence of the indentation line, the result of the measurement is not accurate. In particular, the measurement of the size of used used cartons, such as: We often encounter customers take a very old prototype, asked to measure in accordance with his size after production. And its carton is strictly calculated in the original design process, and it is well applied to pallets and container containers, and can also protect its products very well. This requires us to make accurate measurements on the sample box.

The following describes the measurement of the manufacturing dimensions of a common type 0201 corrugated box manufactured by two different production processes.

The measurement of the size of the 0201 carton produced by the carton forming slotting machine is shown in the figure: The longitudinal creasing line of the carton is at the center of the slot. If the creasing line of the carton cannot be clearly identified, it is difficult to measure its true specification. However, we can measure the size of the slotted slot by measuring its position. It should be noted here that the position of the single-carton carton and the two carton-packed carton are not the same when measured. In Figure 3, we refer to the slots and edges as 1-8. The longitudinal indentation line of the carton is centered in the notch so that the distance from the trim 1 to the centers of the trims 2 and 3 in the figure is the length of the carton; the centers of the trims 4 and 5 to the trim 6 and The distance of 7 is also the length of the carton, from which it can be inferred that the length of the carton from the trim 4 to the trim 6 or the trim 5 to the trim 7; also the trim 2 to the trim 4 or the trim 3 to The distance between 5 is wide. In this way, very accurate dimensions can be obtained during the measurement process.

It is important to note here that if the carton is a one-piece or two-piece carton, the width of the back of the carton is measured. For the aesthetics of the carton, the process adjustment is generally performed. The size of the carton is reduced. 3mm. When measuring the size, the thickness of the slotted edge is generally 6mm. Therefore, the distance from the cut edge 6 to the cut edge 8 in the above figure is exactly one width of the carton. The length of the first near the front of the tongue joint needs to be the length of the carton from the midpoint of trim 1 to trim 2 and 3 . Measure the size of the carton by measuring the position of the knife edge. These details cannot be ignored. The size of corrugated box type 0201 manufactured by the carton die cutting machine measures the cartons produced by the carton die-cutting machine according to the design requirements. Different designs and molding methods produce different sizes. Generally, we can measure the pressure. Trace to measure its size. Here is a typical 0201 carton die cut pattern. As shown in Fig. 4, the position of the indentation is greatly changed when compared with the 0201 carton produced by the carton forming and slotting machine. The longitudinal indentation of the carton is not in the middle of the notch, but rather it is close to the front side; the transverse indentation line is lower on the side than on the front. Such a carton design is designed for a more beautiful appearance of the carton box. For carton size measurements like this, it is generally possible to measure the exact size by measuring the indentation and the knife mark in the carton; because the carton is produced by die cutting, the indentation is small and easy to identify. Of course, it is also possible to measure the size of the cutting edge by measuring the distance from the edge of the knife. This is the same as the principle of the carton measurement of the 0201 produced by the molding machine. It only changes the position of the measurement.

Corrugated carton size design and calculation Conversion and calculation of inside diameter size, outside diameter size, and manufacturing size When the carton design is performed, converting the inside diameter into outside diameter is an important step. Customers often provide us with only the size or style of the product, which requires us to calculate the outer dimensions and manufacturing dimensions of the carton; in particular, the use of containerized products is particularly important for the calculation of the outer case of the carton. A good carton design can save a lot of money on transportation. Here, the relationship between the inner diameter dimension, outer diameter dimension and manufacturing dimension of the carton is first introduced: As shown in FIG. 1 , the length A represents the outer diameter of the carton, the length B represents the internal warp of the carton, and the length C represents the manufacturing size of the carton. The outer dimensions and inner dimensions of the carton are not difficult to understand. For the manufacturing dimensions of the carton, various references are also inconsistent. As shown in Fig. 2, it is the indentation when the carton is not folded. There are two indentations on the upper paper and the lower paper. Referring to Fig. 1, we fold the paperboard, and we can see that the dimension D in Fig. 2 is the dimension C in Fig. 1; that is, the manufacturing size of the carton. During the indentation process, when the corrugated cardboard corrugated board is collapsed and collapsed, the outer dimensions of the carton are actually more than two F distances from the manufacturing dimensions of the carton. After the corrugated board is folded at 90 degrees, the corrugated type at the indentation is almost non-existent. Therefore, when we calculate the size of the manufacturing process, we only need to use the total size of the carton and the thickness of the two paperboards. Of course, the size of the carton can also be calculated in the same way. Once we are familiar with the relationship between the dimensions of the carton, we can calculate the manufacturing dimensions and the outside diameter with the inside diameter of the carton.

However, due to the fact that the corrugated board is not very flat and will cause dimensional changes, we will also increase in size during the design process. As shown in FIG. 3, the manufacturing size and the outer warp size of an 0201 type AB cardboard box having an inner length of 50 cm, a width of 40 cm, and a height of 30 cm were designed. We first calculate the manufacturing dimensions of the carton: the thickness of the AB crucible is 8 mm, and the thickness of each paper is 0.2 mm; according to Figure 1, we can calculate that the length of the carton is 51.4 cm and the width is 41.4 cm. Since it is a type 0201 carton produced by ordinary slotting machines, it is in a straight line along the length and width of the cartons. When the carton flaps are closed, the inner flaps are all placed inside the cartons. The calculation of the height of the carton also needs to add the thickness of the upper and lower cardboard.

Therefore, the manufacturing size of the carton is 51.4 cm*41.4 cm*31.8 cm. Carton outer loops can be rolled out in sequence:

52.4cm*41.6cm*33.4cm. What needs to be explained here is that the thickness of the board may be changed during the production process, and the thickness of the cardboard on the tongue joint may be reduced after the production process; therefore, the internal space is not increased during the calculation. The height of the outer warp is much more varied. It is calculated according to the highest height of the carton after the carton has been put into the carton so that it can be adapted to the container packing requirements. The calculation of carton flap size is shown in Fig. 5. The left side is the size of 0201 type corrugated carton and the right side is the size of the lid. From the figure we can see that due to the influence of the inner flap, the lid is not horizontal but is slightly inclined. The width of the flap is not half the width, but slightly longer, so we add a multiplier to the actual production. We can use the trigonometric function to calculate this magnification factor. However, due to the plasticity of the carton itself, and for ease of calculation, most manufacturers calculate a fixed magnification factor based on the thickness of the cardboard. As shown in the following table: Cardboard thickness below 3mm 3mm-5mm 5mm--8mm 8mm-12mm Magnification without enlargement factor increase 1mm Increase 3mm Increase 4mm Of course, such magnification factor is only suitable for general corrugated boxes; If you encounter a carton that requires a high degree of flapping, you can use functions to determine the magnification factor for the carton flap cover. Also, the magnification factors listed in the table above are not suitable for carton widths below 20cm. Calculation of the flap size of other special-shaped boxes can be calculated by the principle of FIG. 1 and FIG. 2 . Carton blanking specification calculation The current production of cartons is still based on type 0201 corrugated cardboard boxes, as shown in Figure 3. Based on the above, we can calculate how much material is needed to put an ordinary 0201 carton into production. Figure 3: Cardboard length = 2 times the length of the carton + 2 times the width of the carton + the width of the cardboard box The width of the carton = the height of the carton + 2 times the carton flap According to the formula, we calculate the carton blanking specification . For example, we also calculated the blanking specifications of the Model 0201 AB crucible corrugated carton with a length of 50 cm, a width of 40 cm, and a height of 30 cm. The length of the cardboard = 4cm + 50 cm +50 cm +40 cm +40 cm = 184 cm The width of the cardboard = 30 cm + 20.3 cm + 20.3 cm = 70.6 cm The carton's net specification is calculated here. Trimming.

In order to save material as much as possible, the general trimming size will not exceed 1cm. There is no need to trim the edges near the tongue. This blanking specification is 185cm in length and 72.6cm in width; we can directly blank the paperboard mill. Shaped box blanking size can be calculated based on the same principle, but different box type calculation formula is not the same.

In summary, the measurement and calculation of the dimensions of the carton is indeed a cumbersome task, but it is also an important work in the structural design of corrugated boxes. A qualified carton box not only needs to be well protected for the product, but also requires good molding; in particular, the cardboard box that combines the functions of sales packaging and transport packaging, the reasonable size will be the key to the carton design. Because the change in size will directly affect the various performance changes in the carton. When carton workers develop new boxes, we must strictly calculate the size of the carton so that customers' products can be better protected. So when we create value for our customers, we actually create a win-win opportunity for each other!
